July 14, 2008: "Bush urges Congress to open new areas to oil drilling"

Bush urges Congress to open new areas to oil drilling

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush urged Congress on Friday to act before its August break to open new areas for oil exploration in the United States to help ease record high oil prices

Offshore drilling. On paper seems to be a great idea. Lets see, less dependence on foreign oil, lower gas prices, and it helps the economy. Now thats some good stuff. Apparently the Democrats are against lifting offshore drilling regulations because they say there is still 68 million acres available for drilling that has not been used. But what I want to know is whether or not President Bush getting his wish to drill offshore going to actually help us American citizens as we battle against high gas prices. The answer is yes, but not for a long time. It will take about ten years to reap the benefits of this potential move.
Thinking realistically, ten years from now the world will be a whole new place. Ten years of technology and we probably will not be driving cars anymore. Or at least not cars powered by only gasoline. I say leave they offshore drilling alone. If ten year from now we are still running on gasoline, then we have bigger problems to worry about.

We simply cannot use gas forever. No matter how much it costs.
